January 12, 2007, Newsletter Issue #114: Cocaine Detox

Tip of the Week

Cocaine detox most often takes place in a medical facility, in part because users in withdrawal are likely to experience intense cravings that could lead to relapse.

Cocaine leaves the body fairly quickly, so the cocaine detox process mostly involves managing the psychological effects of withdrawal. These can include paranoia, depression, or suicidal thoughts.

Because many cocaine users experience weight loss and malnutrition, healthy meals are an important part of the detox process. After about three to five days, patients are physically free of the drug and may have passed through the most frequent and intense cravings, though these can continue for several months.
