October 20, 2006, Newsletter Issue #104: Outpatient Drug Treatment
1
Tip of the Week
After detox and initial treatment, many patients are referred into an outpatient drug treatment program. These can be intense all-day programs, or organized into partial-day or evening sessions to allow participants to work.
Most include an element of urinalysis to detect relapses, and focus on behavioral therapy and group work to maintain abstinence, learn about how addictions work, and establish drug-free patterns. The program may also include a family component to provide support and information about the addict's ongoing process.
After such a program, patients may move to a less intensive outpatient treatment, amounting to one or two individual or group sessions per week.
