Finding a Support Network

The number one most recommended network of support for men and women who want to recover from addiction is Alcoholics Anonymous (and related programs, such as Narcotics Anonymous or Cocaine Anonymous). This does not mean that the only place in which a recovering person can seek support is through AA, however.

It is recommended that in addition to an active membership in AA, that one also look to the following outlets for support:

  • Supportive family members and friends who are either sober or not struggling with any active addiction.
  • When possible, some form of individual and/or group therapy can be helpful to both the recovering person and his/her family members.
  • Job Placement agencies/Case Management-Some people have lost their jobs as a result of their addictions. If this is the case, it is recommended that one get in touch with organizations such as Jewish Vocational Services who can help rebuild both one's resume and one's confidence.
  • educational programming/classes on the disease or related difficulties can also be a place to learn and to make connections
