December 29, 2006, Newsletter Issue #112: Who Uses Cocaine?

Tip of the Week

In the 1970s and '80s, cocaine was expensive, and those who took up its use tended to be rich and often famous. In those days, it took the form of a white powder, often inhaled through the nose (snorted).

In later years, the development of crack cocaine provided a cheaper, quicker high. Crack is extracted from cocaine powder using baking soda and heat, creating crystals ("rock") which can be smoked.

Population surveys by the National Institute on Drug Abuse reveal that most cocaine users today are older, inner-city residents who smoke crack, fueling the increase in crack rehab patients. However, cocaine use is rising in populations including Hispanics in Texas and teenagers in some cities.
