April 28, 2006, Newsletter Issue #80: Long-Term Programs

Tip of the Week

In some cases it may be necessary for an addict to spend six months to a year in a drug rehab program or alcohol rehab centers. These programs are most important when it is necessary to build an entirely new life to move away from the addiction, including new social ties and job skills.

People with dual diagnoses -- multiple addictions or an addiction plus clinical depression, for example -- may require longer treatment, as may those who are prone to violence or self-harm because an addiction has arrested their emotional development at an adolescent stage.

Longer treatment periods in a drug or alcohol rehab center provide an opportunity for more extensive therapy to treat underlying issues that may have fed into the patient's addictions. Thus an exclusive drug rehab may be a worthwhile investment in forming a more solid foundation for a drug-free life.
