September 8, 2006, Newsletter Issue #98: Withdrawal from Cocaine

Tip of the Week

When a person stops using cocaine, intense cravings for the drug can continue for up to several months.

In addition, the former user may experience listlessness, apathy, sleepiness, physical weakness, or depression. These feelings can lead some people in withdrawal to become suicidal, or to overdose once they regain access to the drug. Many report dreaming about being high, an experience that can cause confusion, cravings, and self-defeating behavior.

Cocaine use is particularly common among people who also suffer depression or attention-deficit disorder. Withdrawing from cocaine will not change these disorders, which need to be treated as well during cocaine rehab programs.
