What is the family model of drug treatment?

Family Model

New research is demonstrating that teaching effective parenting skills to adults in high-risk families may help to keep the children of those families away from drugs. This model is both prevention- and treatment-oriented, since one of the risk factors for families is exposure to drug use.

Family therapists work with all members of a family, not just the addict, in an atmosphere which supports abstinence while seeking to build resiliency and teach coping skills for stressful situations. For instance, graduates of a Los Angeles drug rehab center might meet with a therapist for several sessions with their parents or spouses, to build understanding and support for the addict's recovery.

Some family treatment programs are offered in conjunction with inpatient or private drug treatment centers; others take place once the patient has returned home to live with her family.
