Are online recovery support groups effective?

Online Treatment Support

In recent years the Internet has broadened many people's access to information about addictions and drug rehabilitation programs. It has also allowed people in recovery to band together in online support groups. While a few professionals moderate online groups or conduct online therapy sessions, the vast majority of support groups online are self-help groups, with people in recovery leading others on the same path.

Research results into the efficacy of these groups are mixed, and many studies have found no effect at all, but no widespread harm has been reported for their use. To the extent that they provide a social outlet for recovering addicts and alcoholics who might not otherwise be able to attend an in-person meeting, they are a useful resource in the spectrum of recovery services.
